A kilo of locally-grown mangoes is available from the Traveler’s Market in Male’ City for MVR 120 per kilo on Wednesday, as the month of Ramadan begins.

Ramadan is a month marked by high food consumption. This increased demand had already begun driving up prices of some types of produce as the holy month approached.

A kilo of lime, which was available for MVR 40 a week back, is now being sold for MVR 60. Meanwhile, the price of a coconut, which was previously within the range of MVR 20 – MVR 30, is now available for MVR 50 – MVR 60.

Looking at other produce, a kilo of locally produced mangoes is available for MVR 120, carrots for MVR 40, pineapple melon for MVR 30, and a piece of pineapple for MVR 60.

While the price of certain produce rose, the price of others dropped on Wednesday.

As such, the price of a kilo of Kandoodhoo chilis – which had risen up sharply ahead of Ramadan - dropped from within the range of MVR 480 – MVR 440 to MVR 430 – MVR 380.

The price of another Ramadan staple – watermelons – dropped from MVR 25 to MVR 20 per kilo.

Vendors expect the price of certain produce will go up again this Ramadan.

However, the State Trading Organization (STO) has provided assurance it will ensure a steady supply of essential commodities in order to stabilize prices.
