The Maldives has joined 88 countries and international organisations in endorsing a special declaration adopted at the conclusion of the AI Impact Summit 2026, held in New Delhi from 18–19 February.

The summit brought together governments, experts and industry leaders to strengthen international cooperation in the rapidly evolving field of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The Summit Declaration, grounded in the principle of “Welfare for All, Happiness of All,” outlines a shared commitment to ensuring that the benefits of AI development are distributed equitably across humanity and that societies are prepared for the profound changes driven by the technology.

The declaration identifies seven key pillars, or “chakras,” for advancing global AI development. These include building skilled human resources, empowering communities, improving the safety and reliability of AI systems, promoting energy‑efficient technologies, expanding AI’s role in scientific research, and applying AI to drive economic and social progress.

A proposed framework titled the “Charter for the Democratic Diffusion of AI” aims to ensure that AI tools and capabilities are accessible to all countries, regardless of size or economic standing. The declaration also calls for the creation of shared platforms such as the Global AI Impact Commons and the Trusted AI Commons to exchange best practices, safety standards and successful applications.

Another key component is the establishment of an international network for AI collaboration among scientific agencies, with a focus on democratising access to AI resources and expertise.

The Maldives’ participation reflects the country’s commitment to working closely with the global community on emerging technologies and digital transformation.

The joint declaration is expected to strengthen cooperation in areas such as AI governance, cybersecurity and responsible innovation, priorities that have become increasingly important as AI reshapes economies and societies worldwide. India’s leadership in convening the summit was highlighted as a significant step for the region.
