Eggs, onions and watermelons were the most imported and cleared goods from 15 February to the first four days of Ramadan, according to Maldives Ports Limited (MPL).
MPL’s weekly statistics show that eggs topped the list, with 20,648 cases cleared between 15–21 February. The second‑highest volume was 18,576 sacks of onions, followed by 9,871 cases of watermelons, a staple item during Ramadan.
Other major cleared items during the period include:
Potatoes: 6,926 sacks
Bananas: 3,927 cases
Pineapples: 3,666 cases
Tomatoes: 3,550 cases
Cabbage/kale: 2,825 cases
Eggplant: 403 cases
Papaya: 368 cases
MPL said a wide range of other commonly consumed items were also cleared in large quantities, including peppers, carrots, cucumbers, pumpkins, limes and breadfruit.
The company noted that clearance operations are being carried out at high speed to ensure uninterrupted supply of essential food items throughout Ramadan.
From 15–21 February, a total of 29,322 tonnes of cargo were cleared from the port. Of this, 26,469.21 freight tonnes arrived via container vessels, while 2,852.78 freight tonnes were brought in by general cargo vessels.
During the same period, port staff completed 1,380 consignments, including 946 consignments from container vessels and 434 consignments from general cargo vessels.
