Passion fruit prices jump from MVR 80 to MVR 140 in first four days of Ramadan

The price of passion fruits – a popular choice for making beverages – has jumped from MVR 80 to MVR 140 per kilo within the first four days of Ramadan.

Mohamed Arif, a vendor at the Traveler’s Market in Male’, told Sun that a kilo of passion fruit is being sold on Thursday for MVR 140.

He said that the price had been at MVR 80 per kilo at the start of Ramadan – making it a significant increase in price.

Meanwhile, oranges – another popular choice for making beverages during Ramadan – is available for between MVR 12 and MVR 15 – double what it was at the start of the holy month.

Another popular fruit that has seen a price increase is pineapples, rising from MVR 60 at the start of Ramadan to between MVR 70 and MVR 75.

Meanwhile, the price of fresh coconut remains fixed between MVR 50 to MVR 60, the price of watermelon at MVR 20 to MVR 25 per kilo, the price of melon at MVR 55 per kilo, and the price of local mangoes at MVR 120 per kilo.

• Cucumber: MVR 65 per kilo
• Tomato: MVR 30 per kilo
• Kandoodhoo chili: MVR 430 – MVR 480 per kilo
• Carrot: MVR 40 per kilo
• Cabbage: MVR 25 per kilo
• Collard greens (kopy faiy): MVR 10 per bundle
• Curry leaves: MVR 10 per stalk
• Pandan leaves (raanbaa faiy): MVR 15 per leaf

Vendors expect the price of certain produce will go up again this Ramadan.

However, the State Trading Organization (STO) has provided assurance it will ensure a steady supply of essential commodities in order to stabilize prices.
